LLM Takes 3rd at BCT

December 17, 2012

All throughout the Barnes County Tournament, the Milnor High School basketball team brought a size element that tested every team the Bison matched up against.
Even though LaMoure/Litchville-Marion lacked the size, they played their game, pulling away late in a 61-51 win over Milnor in the third place game of the Barnes County Tournament.
It ended what LLM coach Darren Thielges called a “fantastic tournament” for the team.

Haseleu's 3 gets Maple Valley Past VCHS for 3rd Straight Year

December 17, 2012

For the last three seasons, the boys edition of the Barnes County Basketball Tournament has come down to two teams — Valley City High School and Maple Valley High School.
But not even Maple Valley coach Jay Kocka would have predicted that Saturday's 47-46 win for the Raiders at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse would have been that close.
"Give Valley City credit. With their zone they ran, we didn't attack too much but we hung around and gave ourselves a shot," he said.

NDSU Football Headed for 2nd Straight Championship Game

December 17, 2012

FARGO — For all the work the North Dakota State University football did all season to prepare for a shot at their second straight NCAA Division I football championship, the ultimate yes or no seemed to hinge on one play in Friday's 23-20 win over Georgia Southern University at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.
With 3:10 left in the game, the Bison had a fourth down with three yards to go at the GSU 5-yard line.
So the Bison gave it to quarterback Brock Jensen, who gutted it straight up the middle on a quarterback draw, getting five yards and the game-winning touchdown.

USDA Eases School Lunch Rules

December 17, 2012

School lunches have changed again, but not drastically. Under pressure from several mid-west senators, including Senator John Hoeven (R. N.D.), last week the USDA relaxed some of the strict school lunch guidelines that were put into place last summer.
The biggest change, according to Litchville-Marion Superintendent Steve Larson, is that there will no longer be a charge for seconds. A plus for students on free or reduced meals who had to pay for seconds. Sheri Rode, head cook at L-M Elementary expects more changes.

VCSU Community School of the Arts Seeks Spring Registrations

December 17, 2012

The Valley City State University Community School of the Arts is entering its new year with a new director, Amy Tahran.
Shari Larson, whose last day as director of the community school of the arts was Friday, said Tahran will take over the position in time for when spring semester classes begin Jan. 14.
Larson said VCSU has been doing the community school since 1994, and it is open to anyone in the Valley City area interested in taking classes in the fine arts, including adults, elementary school students, high school students and college students.

New Assessor for Valley City

December 17, 2012

The City of Valley City has a new assessor as of Nov. 13. Sandy Hansen replaces Nick Lee, who worked for the city for three-and-a-half years.
Hansen previously worked for the Barnes County Tax Equilization Office and Valley City Times-Record.
She said she's had a busy first few weeks in her new job.
"Valley City's housing market is growing pretty fast, and I'm just trying to keep up," she said.
Hansen said she's currently working on doing another mass appraisal throughout Valley City, a project that Lee had started.

Barnes County school administrators react to Friday school shootings

December 17, 2012

School Board President Mike Callahan said Friday the school district has safeguards in place to protect students, staff and teachers from tragedies such as Friday's fatal school shooting in Connecticut.
A man opened fire Friday inside two classrooms at a Connecticut elementary school killing 26 people, including 20 children, as youngsters cowered in corners and closets and trembled helplessly to the sound of gunfire reverberating through the building.
