Despite leading by only two points at halftime of Tuesday's 52-33 win over Enderlin in the first round of the Barnes County Tournament, Maple Valley coach Jeff Miller knew his team was on the verge of opening the game up.
It was just a matter of getting the knockout blow, so to speak.
"There were a couple of times in the second quarter where you could feel they were kind of on the ropes," Miller said. "We had a five or six point lead and then we'd turn the ball over a couple of times and they'd be right back in it.
Valley City High School senior Allyson Suhr opened the Barnes County Tournament with the type of game that any post player would love to have.
With a few inches of height over the Litchville-Marion Montpelier girls, Suhr was able to consistently low into the post for open shots and grabbed rebounds with ease.
In the 59-26 win over the Rebels, Suhr finished with 26 points, as many as the opposing squad. But she’s not the type to take credit for it.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota Department of Transportation official says that the state will receive $100 million less from the federal government than is needed to repair flood damage.
The Valley City Times-Record reports that Local Government Engineer Paul Benning sent a memo to state officials outlining the gap in funding vs. need.

The Barnes County Highway Department closed 28th Street southeast this week as underground springs and unpredictable temperatures have created a thick sheet of wet ice east and uphill from County Road 19.
The glacier in question creeps over a steep section of road and into an unprotected ravine, threatening to take motorists with it. The deep roadside ditch plummets approximately 100 feet down near the John Froelich farm south of Lake Ashtabula.
Minn. Twins stopping in VC
Members of the the Minnesota Twins baseball team will be stopping by Valley City next week as part of the team’s 52nd annual Twins Winter Caravan.
The Valley City stop will be a community lunch from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Tuesday at Trestles at the Valley City Town & Country Club.
The lunch will include a hot dog, chips, and a drink for $5, as well as a brief program with a question and answer session and prizes.
While a 13th place finish doesn't always look great on paper, the Valley City High School wrestling team came out of the Bismarck Rotary Tournament last weekend having accomplished plenty.
Not only did the Hi-Liners finish in the top half of a tournament with multiple out-of-state teams and nearly every Class A school, but the team finished with four placers.
Additionally, senior Brandon Larson broke the school's career win record and sophomore Zach Doty broke the 100-win mark for his career on the tournament's opening day.
Ever since Barnes County North girls basketball coach Randy Hooey was in the third grade, he's been around the Barnes County basketball tournaments in various roles.
He's watched it, he's played in it, and today when the Bison tip off against Griggs County Central at 4:30 p.m., it will kick off his third year coaching in it.
"The Barnes County tournaments always provide a great atmosphere," Hooey said. "It's absolutely phenomenal."
It's an atmosphere provided by a change of scenery for the seven Class B schools that are participating in the tournament, along with Valley City High School.
January 9th
ROGERS — Of all the area basketball teams, none got a longer winter break than the Maple Valley High School boys.
Until Saturday's 66-46 win at Barnes County North, it had been nearly three weeks since the team took the floor in a 56-41 win against North Sargent Dec. 17.
So while it wasn't a picture perfect start in the first game back, the Raiders eventually settled in by the second half to run away with the win.
