Area youth will soon have a chance to string up their bows and channel their inner Robin Hood. The Valley City Parks and Recreation Department is once again offering a youth archery class for kids ages 10 to 18 in the basement of the City Auditorium.
âWeâve got a 10-yard range for beginners and a 20-yard range for more advanced shooters,â said Neil Pederson, Barnes County Wildlife Club member and Archery Club Chairman. âWeâve been running (the range) for about 4 years now.â
An altercation at the Valley City VFW Club after midnight on Sunday morning left a Valley City Police Officer on paid administrative leave and wrapped up a wild month for local law enforcement in February.
Officer Randy Schmidt, a 7-year veteran of the VCPD, was off duty when he was involved in an incident with an unidentified woman, but had been working with four other off-duty officers providing security at a Mixed Martial Arts event in the city that evening.
âThe accusation is that he physically assaulted a subject at the VFW,â said interim Police Chief Mark McDonald.
Fire up the roasting pans and grab a few friends -- itâs still not too late to sign up for the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerceâs annual Chili Cook-Off and Community Olympics. The Chamber is bringing the long-standing event back to the North Dakota Winter Show Main Arena on Monday, March 5, and entries are still welcome.
Elaborate booth themes and costumes are part of the fun as local groups and businesses team up to compete for the title of Best Chili, where entries are scored by the distinguished judges on taste, aroma and appearance.

SPRING SEASON: We will start the week of March 19th (weather permitting) and go through the Kohlâs Cup on May 26th.Games days are Saturdays at the soccer field. Practice times and dates are decided by the coach.

There is a Softball Organizational Meeting for all managers and anyone interested in the Adult 2012 Softball League this summer. The meeting is at the American Legion basement starting at 7 p.m. on Wed., March 7.
This is YOUR league and YOUR input is needed before the season starts to make the season a success.

The Mayor of Greenville has a problem. Following a recent oil spill people and animals have become exposed to toxins. To get to the bottom of the extent of the contamination, he turned to the Advanced Learners at Washington Elementary School.
The Times-Record recently chatted with âDakota Air: The Radio Showâ producer and host Merrill Piepkorn about his showâs return to Valley City as part of pre-Winter Show weekend festivities.
Dakota Air will bring its band of traveling troubadours and comedians to Vangstad Auditorium Sunday, March 4, at 3 p.m.

The Valley City High School girls basketball team will have to wait a few more days to take on West Fargo in the Eastern Dakota Conference regional basketball tournament.
Tuesday's game against the Packers, which was set for 7 p.m., was postponed due to a storm that could bring up to a foot of precipitation to Valley City.
The game will be played 7 p.m. Thursday at West Fargo High School.
The American Association of School Librarians division of the American Library Association has recognized the library and information technologies concentration of Valley City State Universityâs online master of education program as a quality school librarianship program.
VCSU is the only university in the North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana region with a nationally recognized program of this type.
