Valley City High School track and field coach Trevor Bakalar said the state meet in Bismarck over the weekend was full of ups and downs for his teams.
Although there was a bit of disappointment — namely, the Hi-Liners’ 4x100 and 4x200 girls relay teams and senior sprinter Molly Willson missing the finals — there was also the delight that three seniors got from placing in their final season.
VCTA summer activities starting soon
The registration deadline is coming up for several Valley City Tennis Association programs.
1) Summer Tennis League: Monday nights at 7pm from June 4 - July 30 playing the World Team Tennis format; $25 entry fee. Open to junior/senior high players and adults.
2) Adult Beginner Lessons: Monday nights from 6-7pm in June (4,11,18,25); $20 entry fee; 4 players minimum.
Registration is due by June 1 to the Valley City Parks and Recreation office. Call 840-1727 for more information.
VCSU offering youth basketball camps

Valley City Eagles 2192 held its 43rd annual award banquet at the Aerie Club with Lorney Behm as the master of cememonies. The hometown builder was Dakota Plains Co-op with manager Ken Astrup who accepted the award and thanked the Eagles.
The Civic Service Award went to Fire Chief Gary Retterath and was presented by Mary Simonson, a former winner.
The Humanitarian Award was given to Lynell Gertin by Don Malec and Gloria VanDyke. Gertin saved Gloria while she choking at the bank.
A number of musical units, including VCHS, performed in Monday’s Memorial Day parade down Central Avenue in Valley City.
WIMBLEDON, N.D. - Cold weather, rain and a five-year wait were not enough to deter the crowds that gathered in Wimbledon for the grand opening of the Midland Continental Railroad Depot Transportation Museum on Saturday.

The Winter Show building looked a little more green and yellow on Saturday as John Deere turned 175, and John Deere Seeding Group of Valley City celebrated with a party open to the entire community.
The celebration featured entertainment for visitors in the afternoon and a employee appreciation dinner to end the evening.
April showers bring May flowers, but May showers may ruin some Memorial Day weekend plans.
Friday’s high temperatures are expected to drop from the low 60s into the 50s on Saturday, when rain clouds and possible thunderstorms are expected to spread throughout the region, which could linger into Sunday.
“Right now it looks like the best chance for thunderstorms will be Saturday night into Sunday,” said Jeff Makowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks. “There’s a chance for thunderstorms later Sunday night but they’ll be a little bit more scattered.”
A major change is in the works for the 2012-2013 school year that most students will probably not notice.
Following a nationwide media blitz earlier this year over lean, finely-textured beef – or “pink slime,” as it was dubbed – the United States Department of Agriculture will begin labeling the ground beef products it provides to schools so America’s school’s food service directors can make the decision as to whether they will include LFTB or not.

CASSELTON — Enderlin/Maple Valley softball player Abbie Tinjum approached her last at-bat in Thursday’s Class B South Region championship game with one goal in mind — get the ball in play and get the final run needed in the 17-7 win over Central Cass.
“I was thinking that I just needed a base hit because we just need a runner in and I can probably make it to first and beat it out,” Tinjum said.
She did what she needed to, putting a ball on the ground in the infield as teammate Rylee Nudell sprinted from third to home, beating the throw.
