Valley City picks Nevada man as new police chief

Valley City has chosen Fred Thompson, a just-retired captain with the Henderson, Nev., police department as new police chief, administrator David Schelkoph announced Wednesday afternoon.

Thompson will begin his new position the first week of June.
Current acting police chief Mark McDonald, VCPD Sgt. Doug Kiefert, Fred Thompson, Patricia Nowak and Ryan Evans were finalists for the job, and went through in-person interviews from May 8 to Tuesday.

Agrium supports V-500’s new sponsorship program

Agrium US Inc. of Rogers is the first business to pledge sponsorship of a V-500 Scholarship for a single student. V-500 has recently kicked off their new scholarship sponsorship program.

This program connects the donors to recipients in a personal fashion. This fall, a student receiving a $1500 V-500 scholarship will learn that Agrium US Inc. is the reason the scholarship is available to them.

Garden Corner

Most likely, you’ve been planning your vegetable garden since the seed catalogs began arriving in January. Our desire to begin planting increased with the warm days we had in March and finding that stores were beginning to stock their shelves with gardening tools, packages of seeds, and many new products offered for gardening. As if those motivators weren’t enough, the smells of freshly cut grass and newly tilled soil are a sure sign that we should be in our gardens.

VC schools honor teachers, staff

Last week the teachers and staff members received grants, awards and a free dinner, but more importantly they received appreciation.

The Valley City Public School District held its annual Teacher Appreciation Banquet at the Hi-Liner Activity Center last week, where 20 staff members - three of them retiring this year - were honored for their service to the district, and Carmelle Kuehn was named “Teacher of the Year.”

The Teacher of the Year award recipient is based on input from students, staff and administration.

VC students recognized at fine arts awards night

Students in grades 9-12 from Valley City High School were recognized for their achievements in fine arts Monday evening at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

Awards were given in various fine arts programs at VCHS to students who excelled in various programs of fine arts throughout the school year.

The evening began with speech awards. Guest speaker Kristofer Kracht, a 1996 VCHS graduate, spoke to the audience about his time on Mrs. Langdahl’s VCHS speech team.
