VC's John Halgrimson athletically influenced by brother Joey

April 27, 2012

When it comes to his choices in athletics, Valley City Junior High School’s John Halgrimson is quick to point fingers. But not in a bad way.
In many cases, he’s just following the example set by his older brother, VCHS senior Joey Halgrimson.
“Most sports that I do are because my brother was in them,” Halgrimson said.  “I like doing what my brother does.”
Thursday at Lokken Field,  Halgrimson was among the top athletes at the Valley City Junior High Track Meet at Lokken Field.

VCHS softball beats GF Central

April 27, 2012

The Valley City High School softball team scored three runs in the final two innings of a win at Grand Forks Central Thursday.
Coach Jason Lindgren said the Hi-Liners wanted to get ahead early against the Knights, and the girls did just that.
The Hi-Liners went ahead 3-0 in the second inning, getting key RBI from Allison Baasch (on a two-RBI single) and a sacrifice bunt by Jasmine Stevens.
Amanda Tangen had a leadoff walk in the third inning, then stole second and was driven in by Dierra Diegel to take a 4-0 lead.

ND outdoors: Outlook good for local wildlife in 2012

April 27, 2012

As far as I can tell, few people are complaining out loud about the early arrival of spring in 2012.
Since 2009 it’s almost felt like we’d skipped a season, or replaced spring with “flood” season.
This year, it started to feel like spring in February and March and it’s almost as if fall never left.
Regardless, the early spring has been welcomed by humans, fish and wildlife alike.

Our outdoors: Recent fishing tricky but rewarding

April 27, 2012

The recently stocked trout in the stream near my house were quick learners this year. With a winter short on snow and a spring that only just recently made up a couple of inches against the lingering drought, water levels were low and the fish were instantly wary after the DNR truck dumped them in. It was a different season from the previous two, where high waters allowed me to be a bit more obvious and gave me more room to work in the water column.

VCSU softball ends home season with a win

April 27, 2012

There were plenty of emotions on the field for Valley City State University’s home finale Wednesday, a double header sweep of Bemidji State (Minn.) University.
There was the joy of the wins — 8-3 in game one, 4-1 in game two — but also plenty of tears shed as the team’s group of seniors took the field one last time and were given framed jerseys as a keepsake.
When all was said and done, though, it wasn’t a bad way to go out.

Blonde Of The Prairie: Remember to remember what you’re saying

April 27, 2012

I have a memory. Oh my do I have a memory. I remember things that could have been purged long ago and far away but my memory has memorized them and that’s all there is to it. In the 10th grade I memorized Marc Anthony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral. I do a very impressive dramatic impression of this grand Shakespearian moment. Stop me on the street any day and I’ll prove it. The point is I don’t need to know this anymore for any reason other than I do. The whole entire speech lives long in my memory-but that’s not all.

The Junior High took third place overall out of 23 teams and the Senior High took 11th out of 24 teams.
