BISMARCK, N.D. - With 16 candidates seeking nine offices, competition for party endorsement was stiff over the weekend at the North Dakota Republican Convention in Bismarck.
There were 1,940 delegates from the state’s 47 congressional districts registered for the convention, which is a 26 percent increase since 2010. However, as nominations began on Saturday, 1,666 delegates were present to vote by 1:47 p.m., but that number edged up to 1,717 by 1:33 p.m. Sunday according to the credentials committee.
It’s unusual for a business to celebrate its 100th birthday while simultaneously planning a retirement party, but manager Mike Schwehr and his crew at C.H. Carpenter Lumber company are doing just that.
“It’s a little hard because you’ve put so much into it,” Schwehr said of the closing. “It’s tough. They’ve been good to us around here, the community’s supported us well. We’ve been thanking everybody for everything they’ve done over the years.”
There is a Rules Clinic at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3rd at the American Legion. Anyone interested in or considering umping this summer is welcome to attend. Sponsor fees are due on Monday, April 2 at 5 p.m. at the Rec Center office.

After dropping the first two games on Friday at the Morningside College Invitational Softball Tournament, the Valley City State University softball team rattled off four wins in a row to finish the tournament 4-2.
In game one on Friday, Bellevue (Neb.) University scored five runs in the bottom of the first and led the entire way in a 7-2 victory. The Vikings mustered only six hits with freshman Shayna Taffinder leading the way with a 2-2 performance at the plate. Jen Shadlock took the loss for the Vikings in the circle.
JAMESTOWN — The way Valley City State University baseball coach Casey Olney looks at it, the success his team had wasn’t necessarily in the box scores of its Dakota Athletic Conference preseason tournament games.
In the weekend, the team went 1-3. The Vikings lost double header at home Saturday to Dickinson State University and Jamestown College, but rebounded with a13-6 win over Dickinson Sunday in Jamestown before closing it out with a 12-2 loss to the Jimmies.

New VCPR classes starting
Valley City Parks and Recreation is offering two new classes, step aerobics and yoga, starting Monday.
Step Aerobics will be offered at the Rec Center starting Monday, April 2. This class is planned for Mondays and Thursdays from 5:15 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the fitness room upstairs at the Rec Center. The class will be low impact with an upbeat, fun atmosphere with easy to follow routines and light weights to strengthen bones & increase muscle mass. Classes will be instructed by Deb White.
There aren’t many teams that get over a month off from competition in mid-season.
But ever since the Valley City State University track and field team last ran a full meet Feb. 16, the majority of the team has been training for the outdoor season, which starts Saturday when members of the team go to Dickinson State for the first outdoor meet of the year.
“That was a good opportunity for us to train,” said coach Ken Frenette, who previously coached at Campbell University in North Carolina, which has a smaller transition period between the seasons.
