Snow aplenty for fun fest

March 2, 2012

A fresh blanket of snow on the ground has set the stage for Valley City State University’s newly-formed Winter Sports Club to hold their first annual Winter Fun Fest this weekend.

Those who have been itching to get out in the fluffy stuff can dust off their cross country skis, snowshoes and ice skates to take part in ski races, hikes, snow sculpting, broomball and snow soccer.

Although weather conditions haven’t been ideal for the club’s first winter season, faculty advisor Philip Deger said the Fun Fest will be a good way to kick off the club’s first big event.

Garage fire blankets north VC with smoke

March 1, 2012

A fire under the engine of a car on 8th Avenue Northwest is believed to be the culprit behind the large plumes of smoke that blanketed the north end of town Thursday evening.

A residential garage was filled with flames, which were quickly knocked down by the Valley City Fire Department, but plumes of acrid smoke billowed from the structure even after the flames had dissipated.

"(The resident) was here, and the garage door was open when the neighbors started to see smoke," said Fire Chief Gary Retterath.

As far as Valley City State University baseball coach Casey Olney is concerned, his team can match up with almost anybody on its schedule.
“We have enough talent to compete with the teams we’re playing against,” Olney said. “We just need to play well.”
The Vikings started their season last weekend with a four-game series at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Vikings lost a pair of games to University of Minnesota — Crookston and split two with St. John’s (Minn.) University.
“We started 1-3 which is disappointing,” Olney said. “We just need to play a little bit better.”

Barnes County North girls beat LMM to advance to regionals

March 1, 2012

JAMESTOWN — Before each of his team’s games, Barnes County North girls basketball coach Randy Hooey writes down five goals on a white board.
The goals are what he sees as keys to the game.
But in Monday’s 58-29 regional qualifying win over Litchville-Marion/Montpelier at the Class B District 5 tournament at the Jamestown Civic Center, the priority was getting the game going from the beginning.
“Number one and two today were fast start,” Hooey said. “That’s something we haven’t done so far in this district tournament.”
