’12 state fair seeks writing entries

Wes Anderson, curator of the Barnes County Museum said this year’s North Dakota State Fair heritage and writing contests are great ideas to preserve memories of people alive today for future generations.

Friday the North Dakota State Fair based in Minot revealed it was having a State Fair Writing Contest and a North Dakota Heritage Contest.

For the heritage contest, residents are being asked to write down and submit their stories about what life was like in the state.

Submitted work will be displayed on the 4-H Wall in the N.D. State Fair Center at the 2012 state fair July 20-28.

Remodeled and ready to go

To watch City Lights Supper Club owner Tommy Bergan in his newly remodeled restaurant is to see a man in his element. As he walks around the bar to greet old friends and new guests, it is clear that hospitality is in his blood.

“My parents own the Taco John’s here in town, so that’s where I got my first start with restaurants,” said Bergan. “I went to school at UND and worked at Red Lobster and the Ground Round just kind of kept going with restaurant management through college.”

Winter arrives

While its late arrival may be arguably fashionable, winter has made a grand entrance in southeast North Dakota.

Mother Nature dropped a reported 5.5 inches of snow on the Valley City area over the weekend according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

“Five-point-five is what are unofficial co-op observer reported, but he’s a good measurer and he lives pretty close to town,” NWS meteorologist Bill Barrett said Monday morning. “That was called in around noon time, 12:05.”

North Dakota ranks first in job creation for third straight year

A Gallup Poll study has again ranked North Dakota the nation’s best state for creating jobs. North Dakota also ranked at the top of Gallup poll rankings in 2009 and 2010.
