Mild weather gives VCSU baseball, softball a chance to practice outside

February 7, 2012

When the Valley City State University baseball and softball teams take the field in late February or early March for their first games of the year, their coaches generally don't expect perfection in the field.
It's simple reasoning — typically the teams are stuck indoors due to winter weather and it isn't until just before those first games that players get to see live fly balls and ground balls.
"Those first games outside have always been a bit of a challenge for us," said VCSU baseball coach Casey Olney. "There's just things you can't really work on in the gym."

Vikings given player of the week awards
Valley City State University basketball players Sekani Milligen and Alyssa Hummel were named the Dakota Athletic Conference Players of the Week Monday.
Milligen played a key role in the Vikings' wins over then-No. 7 Jamestown College Wednesday and Mayville State Saturday.
On the road against the rival Jimmies he led both teams with 26 points and went 9-11 at the free throw line. He then scored 22 against Mayville, which included four 3-pointers and five rebounds.

Stellar second half lifts Vikings over Comets

February 7, 2012

With the season down to its final few games, Valley City State University mens basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky knows his team is hungry to achieve its ultimate goal — a berth in the NAIA Division II national tournament.
So at halftime of Saturday’s 73-48 win over Dakota Athletic Conference opponent Mayville State University at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, he had no problem reminding the Vikings just what they were playing for.

Knights' run defeats Hi-Liner boys

February 7, 2012

The Valley City High School boys basketball team
seemed on the verge of its first Eastern Dakota Conference
win Friday.
Chase Carpenter closed out the first half of the
weekend opening game against Grand Forks Central
with a 3-pointer and the team carried the momentum
into the first six minutes of the second half to take a
39-36 lead with 12 minutes left.
But as quickly as the Hi-Liners got the lead, it
disappeared over the next seven minutes as the visiting
Knights went on a run to go up 12 points, which
the Hi-Liners couldn’t make up in the 64-53 loss.

Special to the Times-Record
The Valley Twisters gymnastics teams performed well in meets last month.
The team started by competing in the 2012 Frosty Classic, held in Valley City Jan. 14 and 15.
The Twisters Level 4 team took third, but did not have enough athletes for a team score in Levels 5 or 6.
For the Level 4 team Jennifer Anderson was 1st on the Balance Beam. Olivia Olson placed 10th. Michaela Thiebert placed 4th on the Uneven Bars and 4th on the Vault with a score 9.4. Anderson placed 9th on Vault with a 9.3. Anderson also placed 7th on Floor.

Wrestlers lose close dual to Jamestown

February 7, 2012

With only five juniors and seniors, but plenty of success, it's easy to forget just how young some of Valley City High School's wrestlers are.
But in Thursday's 36-33 home dual loss to Jamestown, several of the Hi-Liners struggled against older competition in key matches.
"In reality we're a really young team," said Valley City coach Aaron Larson. "We wrestled fine, of course we wanted to win, but we're learning."
Larson said the dual played out about how he expected it to, with one of the key matches coming at 132 pounds.
