Theatre I & II to close in February

January 19, 2012

Wayne Loberg, owner of local movie house The Theatre I & II, revealed in an email Thursday that The Theatre will be closing its doors for good Thursday, Feb. 2.

Loberg said that after working at the theater for nearly 30 years, he has reached retirement age. He stated regretfully in his email, "The economics of the movie business are such that continued operation is just not feasible. The numbers don't lie, and the Valley City moviegoing market simply can't sustain the huge cost necessary to keep a movie theater operating here. Sad but seemingly inevitable."

Twins bring big-league conversation to Valley City

January 19, 2012

As Ron Gardenhire stood up and took the microphone at Trestle's Bar and Grill Tuesday, he saw a bear out of the corner of his eye.
The brown bear, just over seven feet tall, was only feet from numerous Valley City residents and mulling around the platters of beans, grilled hot dogs and potato chips.

Fortunately for the bear, Gardenhire, Manager of the Minnesota Twins baseball team, saw him first.
"T.C., you know they do shoot things out here?" Gardenhire said to the team's jersey-clad mascot. "You've got to get away from the hotdogs."

Twins Manager Gardenhire updates VC fans on Morneau, Mauer, free agents

January 18, 2012

During Tuesday's stop in Valley City, Minnesota Twins hitting coach Joe Vavra emphasized the value of having veteran leaders on the team.
"You've got to have those guys in the clubhouse to take control of the people they're dressing with," Vavra told an audience of about 60 people at Trestle's Bar and Grill Tuesday. "We're off to the side, we're promoting, obviously, what they're supposed to get done on the field, but you've got to have a leader step up," he said. "You've got to have a voice, somebody they can relate to when times are down."

Lemnus comes through in Hi-Liners' win over Fargo South

January 18, 2012

The Valley City High School wrestling team isn't exactly known for its lower weight wrestlers.
Once you get to 138-pound class, you get into the state contenders, but the 106 to 132 pounders tend to be more inexperienced.
"We're really young down there," Valley City coach Brandon Larson said. "We've got some junior high kids going out there."
But in Tuesday's 40-33 dual win over Fargo South at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, it was a younger wrestler who came through.

King speech rediscovered by Ohio teacher, student
CLEVELAND (AP) — A recording of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is getting new attention after being found in 2010 by an Ohio high school art teacher and student searching through items the school library was discarding.
The 1967 speech preserved on reel-to-reel tape was given, and found, at Glenville High School in Cleveland. In it, King says "Our power does not lie in Molotov cocktails. ... Our power lies in our ability to say nonviolently that we aren't gonna take it any longer."
