After three months assessing Valley City, about 20 undergraduate and graduate students at North Dakota State University have come up with lists of community strengths and weaknesses included in an 11-chapter written report.
Students did the assessment as an assignment for Dr. Gary Gorehamâs Community Assessment class.
Goreham is chairman of and professor in the NDSU sociology and anthropology department.
Students outlined results for advisory committee members Thursday in a meeting at the Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technology Center.
Ice anglers should know what theyâre doing before they go out onto the ice. This is what Scott Tichy, park ranger for the Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Ashtabula, wants people to know.
No ice is ever really safe, said Tichy, but ice conditions on Lake Ashtabula are currently poor. Some of the ice is thick enough for walking on, and some isnât. And when a person is on the ice, he canât tell if it is an inch thick or four inches thick, the recommended thickness for walking on.
Itâs best to stay off until the weather is cooler, urged Tichy.
When Valley Cityâs Rosie Larson was a young child, she saw a tree decorated with mittens in the window of a bank in Detroit Lakes. That tree happened to be a charity campaign that helps those in need during the holiday season.
âBeing from a poor family myself, I didnât have mittens or boots, and I thought when I get older, âIâm going to make sure they have the necessities,ââ Larson said.
And so for the 35th straight year, Larson, being the director of a local, independent charity organization called Valley City Cares, has organized an annual mitten tree in Valley City.

Fourth Annual Christmas Cookie Extravaganza will be held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m. Grace Free Lutheran Church, 2351 West Main, Valley City
In an article titled "VCSU to Host Holiday Extravaganza Concert," that was published in the Dec. 5 edition on page 5, the mentioned concert was actually held last Saturday, Dec. 1, and will not be held this Saturday, Dec. 8. The Times-Record regrets the error.
A holiday-season farmerâs market is scheduled for Saturdays until Christmas at the Barnes County Historical Museum from noon to 2 p.m.
Available this month will be holiday crafts, baked goods, fall veggies, and Christmas evergreens.
According to organizer Becky Huber, the winter farmerâs market will be a great place to purchase gifts of locally made Christmas crafts from vendors that include Candy Rasmussen and Janice Syverson, Huber and more.
Shoppers can also enjoy visiting the museum.
The Elevate Within Holiday Extravaganza, which is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Valley City Eagles Club, is just one way the organization hopes to help people de-stress during the holidays.
Valley City State University students spent Thursday packaging up books and other supplies for soldiers as a service learning project and charity campaign.
The students in professor Jonna Zinielâs human communication course have spent the past two weeks gathering donations, including books, cards and letters and basic toiletries, to send to soldiers serving overseas.
The organization, called âBooks for Soldiers,â has grown from sending just books to much more.

Early on in the Valley City High School wrestling team's 40-34 dual loss to Carrington Thurday night, the Hi-Liners seemed like they would simply run away with it.
The Hi-Liners won five of the first six matches, which started at 145 pounds, all by either pinfall or major decision. But as the night continued, the Cardinals showed why they're one of the top Class B teams, getting pins at the lower weight classes, and clinching the win with a decision at 138 pounds.
Minnesota brothers Jake and Austin Rambow have signed letters of intent to play sports at Valley City State University, the school announced Thursday.
Austin, a 6-foot-5-inch forward, will play for the mens basketball team, coached by Jeff Kaminsky. Jake will play baseball, signing his letter with VCSU coach Casey Olney.
The two are from Willmar, Minn., and will join the Vikings for the 2013-2014 seasons.
Jake, the older of the two, will be transferring into VCSU from Ridgewater (Minn.) Community College.
