Blonde on the Prairie: Constants Are Comforting

November 2, 2012

It used to be a front porch overlooking a little thicket of trees. Back in the day it must have been a pleasant place to hang a hat and rock in a rocker the whole day away. I’m guessing a ma and a pa had a conversation or two right there on the porch. I could imagine children opening and slamming the door as they popped in and out for lemonade and fresh baked pie. Maybe they hooked up a radio and listened to Bing, Frank and Dean Martin crooning true love tunes. Most likely the folks would watch wildlife like deer and fox and muskrats appear right there outside the five windows.

Pommerer said each church involved offers to handle a certain amount of baskets and Barnes County Social Services picks up the rest.

Twisters' Fisher Taking Helm of HS Gymnastics

November 1, 2012

In the past, high school gymnasts have generally had to deal with two sets of coaches — one for the high school season and one for the competitive season.
But starting with the upcoming season, the two coaching staffs will be nearly the same.
The Valley City School Board held a special meeting Thursday afternoon, where they accepted the resignation of VCHS head coach Carina Roehrich and approved hiring Dave Fisher, an assistant coach for the Valley Twisters gymnastics club, to fill the position.

Having racked up more than 2,300 yards on the ground this year, the Valley City High School football team knows the importance of stopping the run.
But when the Hi-Liners lost 20-12 to Grafton in their regular season finale Oct. 16, it all came down to an inability to stop Christian Lunde and the rest of the Spoilers' ground game.

Myhre Expected Campaign Ban Lift

November 1, 2012

Valley City City Attorney Russell Myhre will honor federal court Judge Daniel Hovland’s Wednesday’s ruling that the state is not allowed to enforce its law banning Election Day campaigning.

Wednesday Myhre said he had been expecting such a ruling invalidating North Dakota’s 100-year-old law.

“It follows a national trend in favor of free speech. It (Hovland’s ruling) was not a surprise,” Myhre said.
