The Barnes County Food Pantry is appreciative of all the local efforts from businesses, churches, schools, churches and individuals who have helped so far this season, but is still in need of food and monetary donations.
Jo Ann Korf, site manager for the Senior Citizen Center which operates the food pantry, said Monday dollar donations and more food are still needed.
Korf said the demand for services has increased in recent months, “and our fund is down.”
Barnes County Commissioners appointed Beth Didier as county auditor during a special meeting on Monday.
Didier, who lives near Eckelson, is currently employed at the Valley City USDA office as a rural development loan specialist. Didier has a business degree from Valley City State University and worked at the Barnes County Auditor’s office as deputy auditor for nine years. In 2002, Didier ran for the office of auditor but was unsuccessful. This will be a homecoming for Didier, she said.

When Valley City State University assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator Gregg Horner found out earlier this year that he had been nominated to received 2012 NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award, he was humbled but didn't necessarily keep it at the forefront of his mind.
"That, to me, really was the was the end of it," Horner said. "I never really thought that it would go on and I'd end up being named the guy."
Turns out, the nomination from VCSU head coach Dennis McCulloch wasn't the end of it.
Two games in two days at the Dickinson State University Milanovich Basketball Classic yielded two wins for Valley City State University as they pushed their overall record to 5-1 on the season.
In their second game with the Blue Eagles in a week, VCSU's Brittany Lehner led the Vikings to a 61-52 win over DSU Saturday to close out the tournament. Lehner scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor and also went 6-10 from the free-throw line.

I’ve been meaning to ask my doctor If there is anything written in the medical journals about certain bodies being accident prone and magnets to the not-so-common of occurrences. If it’s not written yet I offer myself up to science.
In just a few weeks, local law enforcement will be hosting the Santa, Cops and Kids program for area children who have experienced hardships over the past year.
The annual event, originally scheduled for Dec. 10, will be held on Dec. 17.
Law enforcement officials from various local, county and state agencies will come together to share an evening of shopping and holiday fun with these children.
The biggest cattle show in North Dakota begins in Valley City on Thursday at the Winter Show Event Center.
The North Star Classic kicks off on Thursday afternoon with a BBQ social for vendors and entrants and continues through Dec. 2.
Numbers for the cattle show are up, according to Winter Show board member Dawn Riley. Contestants should note, shows that had previously been held on Thursday, including the pen show, will be held on Saturday this year. The open show will be held on Friday.

Valley City State University womens basketball coach Jill DeVries has seen the difference a good fan base can make.
"It was very evident a couple of years ago, when we had a full house for the Jamestown game, the difference the crowd can have in a game," DeVries said. "Even when we've been on the road at places like Dordt, they just have an outstanding student following.
"The environment can be such a game changer."
It's a culture that has always been at VCSU for games against rivals like Jamestown College, but otherwise left a frequently quiet crowd.
LMES fifth and sixth graders sang "Rocky Top" during the winter program on Tuesday.
