FARGO — All year long, Valley City High School senior Jasmine Stevens played a crucial role in the volleyball team's offensive success, and when the team entered Friday's elimination match in the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament, coach Katy Van Dyke had her ready for more.
"I talked to her (Thursday) and told her 'I'm going to depend on you. You might not kill the ball every time, but you are so dependable about getting the ball over the net,'" Van Dyke said.
VCSU Swept at A.I.I. Tourney
The Valley City State University volleyball team was eliminated on the first day of the Association of Independent Institutions' conference tournament Friday in Mayville.
The Vikings lost 3-0 to both Ashford (Iowa) University and Jamestown College.
Against Ashford, the Vikings had a hard time finding kills and fell 25-16, 25-15, 25-12.

Special Chocolate Day Story Hour at Library

Wednesday Valley City junior high school teacher Kristi Shanenko and her third-period eighth-grade reading class did a special library story hour recently at the Valley City/Barnes County Public Library.
The special story hour was in connection with the library's annual Chocolate Day fundraiser Saturday which raises money for children's materials.
Keith Hovland’s service during the Vietnam Conflict ended more than 40 years ago, but to him, it still feels like yesterday.
Rhiny Weber’s World War II military service may have been shorter than some of his contemporaries at two years, but during those two years he earned a Bronze Star, three battle stars, an infantry combat badge and a POW medal, and spent six months as a prisoner of war in Germany.
Weber became a U.S. soldier at the age of 20 in December 1943, and took basic and infantry training in Fannin, Texas. He spent his time as a soldier in Italy serving in the infantry with Company F, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Division.
Austin Gordon spent the last ten years serving overseas in three different deployments with the North Dakota National Guard, while attending Valley City State University and raising a family of three with his wife Nicole. He said traveling with the Guard gave him much to learn and much to experience.
Gordon, staff sergeant, was first deployed to Kosovo in 2000, two years after he joined the military. His engineer battalion spent six months there, doing construction on the camp and a little work in the surrounding areas.
