The Festival of Trees â a long-running fundraiser for the Mercy HealthCare Foundation â has been set for Nov. 24 at the Valley City Eagles Aerie, said Stephanie Mayfield, organizer of this yearâs event.
Mayfield, until recently executive vice president of the Valley City Chamber of Commerce, said Wednesday this is the first time she has been involved in the fundraiser.
The purpose of the event is to raise funds for hospital capital expenses, such as equipment, that are not covered by normal operating revenues.
People from the area will join together Sunday, Oct. 21 to walk for a subject they hope to shed some light on.Â
The 2012 âOut of the Darknessâ community walk has been hosted annually for the past three years by Mercy Hospitalâs Wellness in the Valley along with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Debbie Anderson, director of Wellness in the Valley, said the intention of the walk, which also takes place in communities around the nation, is to bring the topic of suicide out of the darkness.
An estimated 1,100 students from four of Valley Cityâs hometown school campuses celebrated International Walk To School Day on Wednesday morning.
Students from Washington, Jefferson and St. Catherineâs Elementary Schools, as well as the Valley City Junior/Senior High School students all took part in the event that is aimed to raise awareness of pedestrian needs, especially among children.
