Viking Club Tennis Struggles at UW Stout

The Valley City State University club tennis team had a shot at clinching a spot at the USTA National tournament over the weekend in Menominee, Wis., but struggled to get the wins it needed to.
The Vikings competed in the University of Wisconsin — Stout USTA Tennis-On-Campus tournament, and a win would have vaulted the team over North Dakota State University in the standings to clinch a spot for the national tournament in March.

The September Students of the Month for Valley City Jr High School are Abby Slyter, Tanner Thomsen, Annie Fitzell, and Devin Anderson. The criteria for selection is being a hardworking student, respect for staff and peers, and involvement in school activities.

Proceeds from Debbie Gabel Ride Benefit Hospice

The Thundering Saints have donated $8,000 to Hospice of the Red River Valley, generated from proceeds of the fourth annual Debbie Gabel Memorial Ride held in Valley City on July 28.

The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care to those in Valley City and surrounding communities.

Rocky Gabel, who started the ride in honor of his wife who died of cancer, said Monday the event has grown since it began in 2009.

VC Police Dept. Discontinues Funeral Escorts

The Valley City Police Department has discontinued the general practice of escorting funerals. Police Chief Fred Thompson told the Valley City city commission during its regular meeting Oct. 15 that the city could be liable for any collision caused during an escort.

Thompson said the problem is that when officers are escorting a funeral from town, there might be 15-20 cars with an officer leading and maybe one in back, but the vehicles in between the officers get stretched out.
